PIXAR and Dreamworks – both big names in the animation scene, so big that every one has great expectations for their every release. Their latest releases, however, didn’t succeed in jumping over the bar.

Their first offer is Rio, following a domesticated macaw’s adventures in Brazil. Typical talking animal cartoon. It was neither good nor bad, making it pretty much boring. Blu the blue macaw, from whose name we see such creativity, was snatched by poachers and wakes up in the home of the bookish Linda in Minnesota. In order to preserve his species, Blu flies to Rio where he gets snatched (yet again) by bird dealers right before he gets to mate with Jewel, the female macaw.

The animation, the jokes, pretty much everything is just average in this movie. will.i.am provides much entertainment, however, and the 3D brings up the price.

Everyone was sad when news broke out that the first part of Harry Potter didn’t have a 3D version. Warner Brothers blamed technical problems, abandoning their grand plan of having Part 1 of the last Harry Potter movie in glorious 3D. Nonetheless, the movie still raked in a lot of money in the theater. The producers say that they felt they couldn’t give justice to part 1 if they converted it to 3D, and they wouldn’t have enough time. This time, though, they’ve prepared well and the technology has improved. This November, part 2 will be released – in 3D!

They say that it’s not a technique to increase the sales, they even say that there won’t be flying snitches out of the screen! But they do promise that the 3D will make the movie more enthralling, more exciting, and much more complete! Don’t forget to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2!

Everyone’s favorite game is on 3DS! The very popular life simulation game, The Sims, is still the same addictive simulation, with everything in 3D. But this is actually the problem with The Sims 3D: it’s the same. The gameplay offers nothing new from the old system. In fact, fans have to sacrifice getting used to playing the game on a handheld console, when they are used to playing it on their computers. Since it has been converted to play on a smaller screen, the graphics tend to be crowded, making it difficult to identify what’s happening in your world. The 3D features make it more difficult than it already is, and it is most likely that you’ll just turn off your 3D to save battery power.

The Sims 3 in 3DS is a good start for 3D games. Although it is still far from perfect, it’s done a great job at converting it to a 3D version on a handheld system.

3D movies swept over 2010. This year, will 3D gaming be able to do the same? The gamers are surely cheering for a loud yes! Nintendo has started the revolution with its glassless 3D gaming console, the 3DS, and popular consoles PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 can also be played on 3D TVs. Most of the problems are on the number of games that actually support 3D.

This year, game developers have announced more titles that will be released in stereoscopic 3D. This includes two of the most awaited Marvel Comics games: Thor: God of Thunder and Captain America: Super Soldier. These will be available on the 3DS, PS3 and Xbox 360 with your handy dandy 3D TV. Now, can you imagine the action Captain America and Thor will be able to give in 3D? It’s pretty certain that it’ll be some serious eye candy that’ll make you dodge bullets and monsters. Keep your fingers crossed for your favorite game to have its 3D version!

The 3DS has been released! Gamers rejoiced at the first console to be capable of 3D! But while everyone was praising the 3DS, multiple complaints about headaches, motion sickness, and blurry vision was also raised. With the growing concern about the readiness of our eyes to 3D, a study was made on how the eyes can take the stress of 3D.

Our eyes are capable of viewing 3D: we see a world in 3D, with depth of perception and all that. We see things differently when you have only your right eye open from when it’s the left. Our eyes have the same mechanism, but from different perspectives.

3D is actually following the same principle. The same image onscreen is being sent to our eyes with a slight difference, adding depth to the screen and allowing us to view it in 3D. If how this works is the same as how our eyes do, then why are people having problems with 3d? Well, to put it simply, the bulk of the problem lies on how we are used to viewing an image in 2D and suddenly, it changes into 3D! You can compare it to getting a new pair of glasses. The first few days, you’d get headaches and motion sickness but once your eyes have adjusted, it all goes away. The level of stress for every person differs. Some have mild responses, while others have it severely.

Different people will have different responses, but in time, your eyes will adjust. So don’t worry too much about having eye problems with 3D! Just make sure that you start of slowly, allowing your eyes to get used to 3D bit by bit.

Star Wars fans! Get your glasses ready: “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” will be released on February 12, 2012 in 3D! This will be the start of Lucasfilms’ plans to convert all six Star Wars movies into 3D. Can you imagine all those wonderful light saber fight scenes in 3D?

This, as the fans would know, isn’t the first time that the Star Wars movies are revisited. In 1997, George Lucas re-edited the first three movies and converted them into CGI. It wouldn’t be a surprise, therefore, for Lucasfilms to convert it into 3D. According to Lucasfilms, they would like to reintroduce the classic franchise to the younger generation.

Some fans, however, aren’t too happy with this 3D-conversion because Lucasfilms are said to have added some new alien designs and new scenes. But let’s not speak before it’s out! After all, it is the Force!

In the age of the internet, piracy is prevalent. Many people opt to just download movies because 1. you can watch it for free and 2. you can watch it at the comfort of your home. The movie industry found this to be a big problem, but with the way things are, 3D movies might just save the day.

In 2010, the global box office got US$31.8 billion, a new record for the industry. Experts think that this growth is due to the popularity of 3D movies. The Asia-Pacific region leads the group with a 21% growth in ticket sales. In the US and Canada, a good US$2.2 billion came from 3D movie ticket sales.

The industry is rejoicing at this new record, made in spite of the weak economy and digital theft. The focus is now on 3D movies! Don’t forget to support these movies!

Television and gadgets are in the forefront of 3D technology, but theaters aren’t one to be left behind. The Metropolitan Opera revolutionizes the opera experience by employing 3D technology for their stage acts. Actors will now be able to move through 3D projections of forests, mountains, and whatever location they wish to be! Now, this is what first-class art is!

The technology will be used for the first time in next season’s production of Wagner’s “Siegfried.” This show is shown all over, but the added 3D projections might give the Metropolitan Theater an advantage.

Those behind this innovative technology are hoping to increase the people who watch opera. Theater is currently behind movies when it comes down to popularity, but having 3D projections in an operatic production might entice 3D-enthusiasts to watch, too.

With 3D-capable phones starting to come out in the market, have you wondered on what you will do when you get one? There isn’t, after all, much that is coming out in 3D other than movies, and to stream a 3D movie, well, it’ll probably eat out your phone’s data limit before reaching a quarter of the movie. So what, then, is the point of having such a cool gadget as a 3D-capable cellphone?

Well, researchers have discovered an answer to your problem! 3D movies, using a new technology, can be cut to around 40% of its usual size via streaming! A new video-coding technique, known as Multiview Video Coding, is currently being developed in Europe. According to its developers, this technology can flatten the images needed for stereoscopic 3D, thereby reducing the video’s bit rate.

Developments on 3D technology is growing very quickly, and it probably won’t be long before we see people popping out of our cellphones.
